"Nanomaterials in agriculture: can they make any difference?"

Resumo: Agriculture is under huge pressure for increasing crop production. The growth in  world population and the improvements in our standard of living have challenged this sector that supplies us with food, feed and fiber. Nevertheless, in the near future, it might also be responsible for producing fuel and platform molecules for the chemical industry. In this context, crop production must increase. Differently from the past, we are fully aware that deforestation for opening new crop lands is not a wise choice. Thus, the necessary increments in production must come from technological implementation.
In this seminar we will discuss the potential benefits and possible threatens that nanomaterials can bring to agriculture. At a first glance, they could be used as fertilizers or to release nutrients and pesticides, but are these approaches economically viable? Are there any other potential applications? Our group has employed X-ray absorption (XANES and EXAFS) and fluorescence (u-XRF) spectroscopy to investigate whether nanomaterials are absorbed, translocated and metabolised by plants. We will present experimental results on: i) the effects of nano CuO and Fe3O4 the development of seeds; ii) The mechanism of root uptake of ZnO nanoparticles; and iii) Foliar absorption and transport of ZnSO4 versus ZnO.
